A prosecutor in Denpasar yesterday demanded a 45-year-old Swiss national, who allegedly smuggled around 30 grams of marijuana into Bali last year, be sentenced to 10 years in prison.

In a trial held yesterday via teleconference, prosecutor I Made Dipa Umbara said that the foreigner, identified by his initials RH, was guilty of smuggling drugs and should be sentenced according to Article 113 of Indonesia’s 2009 Narcotics Law, which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

“Hereby demanding the defendant RH be sentenced to 10 years in prison reduced by his detention period,” Dipa said, as quoted by Tribun

Dipa also said that RH should be made to pay a fine of IDR1 billion (US$64,275).

The Swiss man’s legal counsel objected to the prosecutor’s demand and said they will provide a written defense. The next court date is scheduled for next week.

According to reports, RH was arrested last September at Ngurah Rai International Airport. He reportedly admitted to authorities that the illegal drugs belonged to him and that he had acquired them in his home country of Switzerland.
