A BMW sedan parked at Ngurah Rai International Airport has been the subject of much discussion online lately in Bali, as people inevitably began speculating the car’s ownership and why it was left there after first entering the airport back in 2016.

Yes, you read that right. According to reports, the maroon BMW has been parked at Ngurah Rai since September 2016. An airport spokesman told local media that the owner owes more than IDR70 million (US$5,017) in parking fees.

Though efforts have been made to trace the car back to its owner via the car’s license and registration, the registered address proved to be false.

“No one is living there, as there are no actual house [on the address],” Arie Ahsanurrohim, Communication and Legal Manager at Ngurah Rai International Airport, said yesterday.

Ngurah Rai has handed over the case to the police, in hopes that they will be able to locate the owner of the mysterious car.

“Whether or not this is a stolen good or the product of other crimes, what we know is that all these years we have done our best. Now we hand it over to the police,” Arie said.

Arie explained that the airport doesn’t currently have rules limiting the length of time a car is allowed to park on its grounds, as long as they are able to pay the parking fees. He also noted that the BMW has been monitored every three months, as per their standard of operations.
