Bali Police arrested two Polish nationals yesterday for allegedly trying to carry out an ATM skimming operation on the island. The suspects were reportedly caught while attaching an illegal device to an ATM.

The suspects, identified as 22-year-old Lachowski Dawid Przemyslaw and 35-year-old Wojcik Gawel Amadeusz, were reportedly arrested in Karangasem regency’s Candidasa area.

“[One of] the suspects turned off the ATM machine to install a router, which is used to steal data from the bank’s customers,” Yuliar Kus Nugroho from the Bali Police told reporters yesterday.

The bank had alerted authorities to suspicious activity at one of their ATM machines, which led police to launch a surveillance operation. Przemyslaw and Amadeusz were arrested in the early hours of Wednesday as they were allegedly attempting to retrieve data from the ATM.

“One of them entered the ATM booth and turned it off by pulling the power plug and tried to install another device, while the other stood guard at the front,” Yuliar explained, adding that Amadeusz had been carrying a knife with him.

Under Indonesia’s Information and Electronic Transactions Law (UU ITE), the suspects could face up to 10 years in prison.
