“It was around 3:30am, he had been drinking and he got into a fight with another foreigner, but the other person left the scene,” I Nengah Wika, an officer with Badung regency’s Public Order Police (Satpol PP), said.

MGF was then kicked out of the club by security guards and acted out by allegedly kicking several motorbikes parked near the sidewalk. Authorities reportedly had to tie him up with a rope to calm him down. 

He was detained for a couple hours, but was then escorted back to his hotel by a Satpol PP officer, Wika explained. 

MGF’s is one of several more recent cases of misbehaving tourists on the island. Recently, news of the sort have been making headlines with great regularity. 

The cases differ, of course, as some tourists seem to genuinely suffer from mental health disorders – which usually means officers will escort them to a local mental hospital – while others seem to be running against the wind while intoxicated. 

“Every time we receive cases of such tourists, there’s not much we can do except to send them to a mental hospital if the case turns out to be one of mental health,” Wika explained. 

“This is the impact of visa-free [policy]: these foreigners come here and they don’t have money to pay for their meals, then they will act out … it happens a lot.”
