A 58-year-old Japanese national who participated at the annual Maybank Bali Marathon yesterday reportedly died shortly after collapsing during the competition. According to local media, he is suspected to have died of a heart attack.

“For now it is suspected that he died of a heart attack, and he was initially taken [to a hospital] by a PMI (Indonesian Red Cross) ambulance, but he didn’t make it. His body is now at the Kasih Ibu General Hospital,” Bali Police spokesman Hengky Widjaja told Liputan 6.

Hengky identified the deceased as Atsushi Ono and said that he was registered in the full-marathon (42.2 kilometers).

The Maybank Bali Marathon is an international-level race which was first organized in 2012. This year, it took place in Bali’s Gianyar and Klungkung regencies and consists of four categories: the marathon, half-marathon (21.1 kilometers), 10k run and kids dash.

Nearly 12,000 participated in the event this year, comprising both Indonesian and foreign runners.

In last year’s event, a 50-year-old Indonesian runner reportedly died because of a heart attack, shortly before reaching the finish line.
