A man from Maumere, East Nusa Tenggara, has reportedly sued his ex-girlfriend of three years, demanding compensation of around IDR 40 million (USD 2,814) for “the losses incurred” from their failed relationship.

The man, who has been identified as Alfridus Arianto by local media, filed the lawsuit on July 24, as reported by Detik.

According to a report from Pos Kupang, Alfridus had intended to propose to his now ex-girlfriend, Fransiska Nona Lin, before they broke up. Fransiska refused, however, after finding out that he is still married to two other women – one of whom lived in Makassar, South Sulawesi, while the other lived in Surabaya, East Java – each of whom he has a child with.

“They broke up because Alfridus confessed that he already had two wives. Fransiska Nona Lin did not want to become the third wife,” Fransiska’s lawyer, Marianus Moa, told Pos Kupang.

Marianus added that Fransiska had never asked for money from Alfridus during their relationship, nor did she try to swindle him.

Last Friday, during a session at the Maumere District Court, Alfridus said that Fransiska must pay him tenfold if she decides to get married to another man.

“In 2016, I made a statement that if you [Fransiska] married another man, you must return my money by tenfold. I said it through the phone, and she has admitted that this [conversation] took place,” Alfridus said, as reported by Kompas.com.

During the court session, Fransiska said that she previously regarded what was given to her during their three-year relationship as an expression of love.

“[But] he’s asking for it all to be returned, [including] mobile phone credit and all other things that he has given me. He wants it all back, every little thing,” Fransiska said.

The case is being treated as a simple civil lawsuit, Judge Arif Mahardika from Maumere District Court told Kompas.com. Last Friday’s court session, he added, was the second one in the trial.

In what might have been an unexpected turn of events for Alfridus, Fransiska has decided she will countersue him, her lawyer said. According to Pos Kupang, she will demand compensation in the form of IDR 400 million (USD 28,151) for all the drinking water Alfridus consumed during his visits to her house, and the use of the toilet in Fransiska’s home.
