A tragic accident on the Denpasar-Gilimanuk Bypass yesterday took the lives of a couple who died after they were run over by a truck. They leave behind two daughters, one of whom was with them at the time of the accident but survived with injuries.

The couple, who have been identified as I Gede Rustiada and Ni Wayan Juni Artini by local media outlets, were on a motorcycle with their youngest daughter, identified by her initials NMSA, as they were trying to overtake a vehicle in front of them on the Denpasar-Gilimanuk bypass.

Another motorcycle was apparently trying to do the same, which caught Rustiada by surprise and caused his motorcycle to fall to its side, on top of the road’s center line. It was at that moment that a truck, which had already been in close proximity on the other side of the lane, tragically ran over the couple and their daughter.

“The wife died on the scene, while the husband died when he was taken to the hospital. Their child survived with minor scratches and a bump,” Ida Ayu Made Kalpika Sari from the Tabanan Police told Tribun-Bali.

As reported by Nusa Bali, the couple leave behind two daughters, NMSA and her sister, 12-year-old NPFMP.

Bali’s Gilimanuk-Denpasar Bypass is so infamous for the numerous deadly accidents that have taken place there that it is locally known as Jalur Tengkorak, or the “Skull Track.” In just 2016, 54 people reportedly died because of accidents along that stretch of road.
