After 3 earthquakes strike off Bali’s coast in one day, officials caution residents to remain alert
Last night, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Bali at 9.17pm. Indonesia’s Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) noted that the quake’s epicenter was 198 kilometers southwest of Nusa Dua, and had hit at a depth of 10 kilometers.
“Though the epicenter of the quake was very far from Bali and Lombok, some residents of Lombok felt the tremors,” Daryono, BMKG’s head of earthquake information and tsunami warning division, said in a statement received by Coconuts Bali.
That was the third quake to have jolted the island yesterday, the first one having occurred at 9.29am with a magnitude of 4.9 – which was later revised by the agency to 4.6 – and followed by another one at 18.53pm, which had a magnitude of 4.1. There has been no reports of damages or injuries following any of the quakes.
“With the three earthquakes that struck off the coast of Bali in a day, we ought to be more alert, but there’s no need to fret and worry,” Daryono said, highlighting that earthquakes cannot be predicted.
After the quake that struck yesterday morning, a video of high waves ravaging the temple at Nusa Dua beach went viral, stoking fears among people on the island. It prompted an official statement from the Bali Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), which clarified that the video was actually from June 2018.
