Bali’s very own Keramas Beach, which is known for its high-performance waves, is the third stop for this year’s World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour, an event bringing together more than 50 top surfers from across the globe.

The event, the 2019 Corona Bali Protected, is starting today, May 13 and will run until May 25.

“From Australia to Indonesia, and then Brazil, South Africa, North America, French Polynesia, Europe and Hawaii. This is proof that Indonesia is a world-class surfing destination,” Ricky Fauziyani, deputy assistant for regional marketing at the Tourism Ministry, said, as quoted in a press release.

The WSL Championship Tour has crowned world champions since 1976, and is generally considered the benchmark for world-class competitive surfing.

“The WSL Championship Tour is home to the world’s best surfing,” Sophie Goldschmidt, chief executive of WSL, said in a press release.

”We have an international field of men’s and women’s surfers and a global tour of the world’s best waves in some of the most idyllic locations in the world.”

The Indonesian government is hopeful that working with international events like WSL will help cement Bali’s reputation as a top surfing destination for foreign tourists, which is why the Tourism Ministry has been supporting several surfing events throughout the years, according to Indroyono Soesilo, who heads the Marine Tourism Team at the ministry.

“Indonesia has hundreds of surfing spots, 30 of which have become world-class surf destination. The 2019 WSL will help put Indonesia as the topmost surfing destination in the world,” Indroyono said.
