Police in Central Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) are investigating a zumba session that took place last Friday, which saw hundreds of women participating while ignoring proper health protocols.

“We will carry out a police investigation, we will call the organizers and committee, because this activity did not have a permit,” Esty Setyoso Nugroho, Central Lombok Police Chief, said.

A video of the zumba session widely circulated over the weekend, showing a crowd comprising hundreds of women clad in yellow moving to music in the background as they follow several instructors on stage.

Most of the participants did not appear to wear masks, and there was virtually no social distancing between them. It was soon identified that the event took place at a hall in Central Lombok regent’s office, as confirmed by an official.

According to reports, the event was organized by Indonesia Sports Women’s Association (Porwosi) in Central Lombok.

“This is extremely counterproductive to what we have been doing thus far to prevent COVID-19 transmission, it is disappointing,” Esty said.

NTB has reported 4,892 COVID-19 cases as of yesterday evening, according to data published by the provincial government. Of that total, Central Lombok has confirmed 278 cases.
