Denpasar officials warn of collapsing trees amid strong winds
Strong winds reportedly toppled dozens of trees across Bali yesterday, with officials in Denpasar city cautioning the public today to remain alert for falling trees until at least tomorrow.
“Yesterday’s situation with the strong winds that caused many trees to fall could potentially continue until Wednesday, [so] the public should remain alert,” Ida Bagus Joni Ariwibawa, an official from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) in Denpasar, said.
Officials across the province reported trees falling due to strong winds yesterday, with eight known locations in Denpasar, 11 in Badung regency, and at least several from Tabanan regency. Some of these trees blocked roads and fell on buildings and houses, according to reports. Thankfully, there are no reports of any casualties.
An official from the local chapter of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Iman Faturahman, said that yesterday’s strong winds were recorded at a speed between 14 and 22 knots, as measured on the Beaufort scale.
Though the recorded speed did not fall under the “extreme” category, Iman said the public should still be cautious.
