Houses damaged as rare hail fall on Bali, East Lombok
Some parts of Bali and East Lombok recently witnessed hail that damaged dozens of houses and gained attention on social media as people were caught off guard by the relatively rare weather phenomenon.
On Sunday, three villages in the East Lombok regency of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) witnessed hail fall, which reportedly caused damage to at least 31 houses. Hailing also took place in Buleleng regency around noon that same day, and lasted about half an hour.
The latter event was caught on video and shared on social media, with one community account on Instagram describing the hail as being similar in size to coffee beans.
Hailing was also reported to have occurred in Pelaga village of Bali’s Badung regency last week.
Though it might not occur every day, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has emphasized that hail is not all that uncommon in Indonesia, amid some concerns among the public.
“Basically, hail in Indonesia is generally not an extraordinary event, it’s a normal occurrence,” Eka Putra, a weather forecaster from BMKG in Denpasar, said.
Eka explained that recent hailing occurred due to cumulonimbus clouds, which are anvil shaped and usually thunderstorm-producing clouds, common in tropical regions.
