Police arrested a 34-year-old villa marketer in Bali accused of embezzling IDR215million (US$15,224) from a Ukrainian tenant in the past two years.

“The suspect admitted to having used up the money for daily expenses,” I Made Yudistira, who heads the criminal investigation unit at the Kuta sub-precinct, said yesterday.

The suspect, identified as DS, worked as a marketing staff at a holiday villa in Legian, Kuta, when his victim, identified as 34-year-old Ukrainian national OS, first deposited IDR50 million to rent the accommodation back in December 2018.

According to reports, OS followed up with a series of deposits throughout 2019 which amounted to over IDR450 million in total. Despite the payments, the villa owner reportedly locked the villa gates in December of last year and said that he has yet to receive the rental fee from OS.

“Afterwards [the victim] reported the matter to the Kuta sub-precinct to be processed further,” Yudistira said.

Police launched an investigation into the case, and received a tip-off about DS’ whereabouts in Kerobokan area last Friday, leading to his arrest.

“Based on our interrogation, DS admitted to his crime that [IDR215 million in] rent money for the villa was never paid to the owner,” Yudistira said.

DS has been charged with embezzlement under Indonesia’s criminal code (KUHP), which is punishable by up to four years in prison.
