Bali’s recent surge in coronavirus cases are gaining spotlight at the national level, with the Indonesian COVID-19 task force noting that the spike reflected more than a hundred percent increase from last week’s numbers.

“The highest surge in [COVID-19] cases is in Bali, where it saw more than 100 percent increase, from 565 cases [the week before] to 1,134 cases,” spokesman from the task force, Wiku Adisasmito, said during a virtual press conference yesterday.

For more than a week now, Bali has reported more than 100 daily cases. The additional 164 cases reported yesterday brought the provincial tally to 6,549. That includes 12 deaths, the highest number of daily death counts reported in Bali thus far.

I Made Ady Wirawan, who heads Udayana University’s School of Public Health, yesterday doubted the official numbers, saying that it may only be “a portion of the real number of cases.”

He also said health experts are unable to estimate the peak in COVID-19 cases in Bali due to “low rates of testing.”

Nationally, Indonesia reported an 18 percent increase in coronavirus cases this week, after recording more than 3,000 daily cases for more than a week now. As of yesterday afternoon, the national caseload stands at 200,035.
