Bali sees biggest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases 1 month after reopening to domestic tourists
Exactly one month after Bali opened its doors to domestic tourism, the province today recorded its highest single-day spike of COVID-19 cases.
The Bali provincial government reported 129 additional coronavirus cases this afternoon, bringing the provincial tally to 5,207.
This includes 705 active cases and 68 deaths.
The popular holiday destination reopened to domestic tourism on July 31, as part of a tentative timeline that began with local tourism restarting within the island early last month and concluded with plans to reopen to foreign tourists in September.
However, the last phase of the plan has effectively been scrapped for the time being, as Bali Governor Wayan Koster recently confirmed that Indonesia won’t be reopening its borders until at least the end of 2020.
Thus far, there is no official link between the tourism reopening and the record COVID-19 daily count in Bali.
Bali reopening to domestic tourism, meanwhile, had been met with mixed views. One minister previously said that Bali’s economic recovery is crucial for the national tourism industry, despite coronavirus cases in Indonesia showing no sign of slowing down.
