Police have arrested a 20-year-old man, who has been on the run for almost eight months, for the alleged statutory rape of his employer’s child.

The man, identified by his initials MTI, was arrested at his home in Banyuwangi, East Java last week.

“We pursued the suspect who has been moving around in hiding,” Suratno, deputy director of Bali Police’s criminal investigation unit, said yesterday.

The rape incident itself occurred last year in May, when the suspect entered the victim’s room in the middle of the night. MTI threatened the victim, who’s reportedly underage, with a knife to keep her from screaming before raping her.

The case came to light in December after the victim told her parents of what had happened. The parents subsequently filed a report with the Bali Police.

MTI was charged with articles from Indonesia’s child protection laws on statutory rape, which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
