Bali’s best known for being a surfer’s paradise and the bucket list destination for a beach holiday, with its breathtaking natural beauty and yoga retreats. These days though, the resort island isn’t seeing as much tourism due to the COVID-19 pandemic that’s been sweeping the globe.

However, the pandemic hasn’t just affected tourism, it’s also disproportionately affected the disadvantaged in the community.

Surfer slash videographer David Biner has started an initiative to distribute food to families in need, aptly named The People Must Makan (makan means to ‘eat’ in Bahasa Indonesia) and they’re currently still accepting donations. David Biner has been working with community leaders and Bali Life Foundation to get the food and donations to the communities that need it most.

At time of publishing, the project has already reached more than halfway of their US$30,000 goal. There’s still time to pitch in, and no amount is too small. Donors will also receive a drone panoramic shot of south Bali shot by David Biner himself — a reminder of the beautiful community you’ll be helping. Check out this video of David talking about the campaign below:

That’s not the only way you can help. Bali Life Foundation, or Yayasan Bukit Kehidupan Ungasan, has been working hard to provide basic needs to thousands of people every year. Since its inception, the non-profit organization has taken on multiple community projects with the aim of giving hope, purpose and dignity to underprivileged children and families.

They also continue to do street visits where they offer food and clothing to street beggars twice monthly. This also allows them to identify potential kids that require assistance. More than a hundred people including children benefit from these visits, and the good work continues.

Besides taking in street children and helping with their educational development at their Street Kids Center, they also conduct workshops for mothers to learn practical skills to increase their future job prospects while their children are cared for. If you’re able, do consider making a direct donation to Bali Life Foundation to support them in their efforts here.
