Officials in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) recorded 74 cases of COVID-19 among children in the province, with reports suggesting that the latest data comprises at least two dozen babies and toddlers.

The two most recent cases of pediatric patients in NTB were announced yesterday, a five-month-old and an 18-month-old. The patients are both from West Lombok and reportedly did not have contact history with any COVID-19 patient.

“Most of the children are infected from their parents or other members of their family. But there are some whose infections have yet to be traced,” Nurhandini Eka Dewi, who heads the Health Agency in NTB, told Lombok Post.

Dewi previously noted that parents ought to limit their activities outside their home, and for children to stay at home at all times except for urgent matters, such as seeking medical assistance.

Joko Jumadi, who is from the Child Protection Institution (LPA) in NTB, said that the number of COVID-19 cases among children in the province reflects the second-highest across Indonesia, after East Java.

On May 18, the Indonesian Pediatric Association (IDAI) took to Instagram to share their findings on children cases of COVID-19 across Indonesia, and reported 584 confirmed coronavirus cases among the age group, which also includes 14 deaths. IDAI also said that over 3,300 children are listed as patients under observation (PDP) in the country, 129 of whom have died as suspected coronavirus patients.

The findings, according to IDAI, indicate that COVID-19 deaths among children in Indonesia are “high,” and show that children are not invulnerable to the viral disease.
