Police in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) say they’re investigating a viral video and photos showing the alleged torture of a teenage girl at the hands of her fellow villagers last week.

According to reports, on Wednesday, a 16-year-old girl identified by her initials NB, a resident of South Babulu Village, Kobalima was accused of stealing a gold ring belonging to a neighbor. In the video, several villagers are seen tying her elbows up to a rope hanging from a beam in the ceiling.

While standing and with her arms tied back, several men then threw punches at the teenager — some hitting her in the face — while they forced her to confess to stealing the ring, which she never admitted to.

The girl reportedly remained tied up until the next morning.

Local police say the girl’s family reported the incident on Thursday. An investigation into the incident has been launched, including into the allegation that the village head led the villagers in torturing the girl.

“Regarding the involvement of the village head, we will get there and question witnesses thoroughly. We will determine all who were involved,” Kobalima Precinct Chief Marthen Pelokila told Merdeka today.

The police did not disclose details about any injuries sustained by the girl.
