Police in Bali’s Jembrana district said today that four men were arrested for an alleged attempt to smuggle 100 kilograms of marijuana through Gilimanuk Port over the weekend.

“[Our investigation] began with a tip-off from local residents, which led us to step up surveillance at Gilimanuk Port,” Jembrana Police Chief, I Ketut Gede Adi Wibawa, told reporters earlier today.

Adi explained that two of the men were arrested past midnight on Saturday, when authorities also seized 100 packets of “dried leaves” that were suspected to be marijuana, which the suspects allegedly hid behind the seats of their car. The men, identified as 35-year-old HP and 27-year-old USS, are from North Sumatra and Bali’s Klungkung district, respectively.

Based off their statements, police then arrested two more men in the Melaya sub-district of Jembrana, 33-year-old FAR and 44-year-old RN, both of whom are reportedly from North Sumatra.

“The four suspects who were arrested at two different locations belong to the same network and divided the tasks in their crime to the Jakarta group and Bali group,” Adi said.

He added that the Jakarta group was responsible for bringing the marijuana to Gilimanuk port, while the Bali group was tasked with receiving the drugs and deliver them to Denpasar.

According to reports, authorities also seized two more packets containing what was suspected to be crystal methamphetamine, locally known as shabu, weighing about 0.1 grams.

Under Indonesia’s notoriously harsh drug laws, the men individually face a maximum sentence of lifetime imprisonment.
