Police are reportedly in pursuit of a truck driver who crashed his vehicle in the early hours of Monday. Authorities said that the truck was transporting more than a dozen sea turtles.

“The accident happened at around 4am, after which the driver ran away. So when one of our officers arrived at the scene, there was no one,” Ni Luh Tiviasih from the Denpasar Police told Detik.

Detik also reported that police are still looking for the owner of the truck in hopes of locating the truck driver.

Meanwhile, the turtles have been evacuated to the Turtle Conservation and Education Center (TCEC) in Serangan, Denpasar.

“They are currently being treated and still alive, though we don’t know how old they are just yet,” Sulistyo Widodo, from the Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) in Bali, said.

I Made Sukanta from TCEC said that there are a total of 18 sea turtles under their care, some of which are currently being treated because they are sick. Sukanta explained that they all vary in size, with the largest being 103 centimeters in diameter and the smallest at 50 centimeters.
