The trial of Nikita Olkhovskyi Sergeevich, a 33-year-old Ukranian national who was arrested for alleged possession of marijuana and cocaine back in May, began yesterday at the Denpasar District Court, where he faces judgment under Indonesia’s notoriously harsh drug laws.

Prosecutor Ni Luh Wayan Adhi Antari said Sergeevich had bought 11 plastic packages containing marijuana and one package containing a different form of narcotics on May 17, as reported by Detik. She added that Sergeevich had bought the drugs for US$500 from a man identified as Doni in front of a nightclub in Seminyak.

“Then on Sunday [May 19], the defendant used what we suspect to be marijuana … Followed by officers from the Denpasar Police searching his person the next day though they did not find any forbidden goods,” Antari was quoted as saying.

The police then found plastic packages allegedly containing drugs after searching the villa he was staying at, which is reportedly located in Kerobokan, North Kuta. A laboratorium exam later confirmed those packages had contained marijuana, while one other package containing white powder was confirmed to be cocaine.

“The defendant has been using or consuming marijuana and cocaine for the past five years, with the occasional stop and relapse. He uses marijuana and cocaine to treat his depression,” Antari said.

Under Indonesia’s drug laws, Sergeevich faces a maximum charge of 12 years’ imprisonment and a maximum fine of IDR8 billion (US$563,000) for drugs possession.
