A prosecutor at the Denpasar Court yesterday demanded that Alexandru Boarta, a 32-year-old Romanian national who was arrested in March for attempting an ATM skimming scheme on the island, be sentenced to 1 year in prison.

“We demand Alexandru Boarta to be sentenced to one year in prison,” prosecutor I Nyoman Triarta said, as reported by Tribun-Bali.

Triarta said Boarta is guilty of violating Article 30 of Indonesia’s Information and Electronic Transactions Law (UU ITE), which carries a maximum sentence of eight years in prison.

Boarta was reportedly arrested in Badung regency back in March, after he installed a device on an ATM machine that was intended to record personal information from anyone who uses the ATM.

At the trial, Triarta said Boarta had gotten the device online from an acquaintance in China. A witness reportedly caught sight of Boarta while he installed the device, and the matter was immediately reported to the Badung Police, leading to his arrest.

According to Tribun-Bali, his trial continues on October 1.
