Police in Bali said yesterday that a man from Yogyakarta, identified by his initial H, was arrested for allegedly running an online-based prostitution business on Twitter.

Last month, authorities reportedly tracked a Twitter account containing pornographic posts, some of which explicitly offered sexual services.

Their subsequent investigation led them to H, who had been living in Kerobokan, North Kuta.

“After he was questioned, the suspect is indeed the owner of the Twitter account, which has been used to offer prostitutes,” said Police Commissioner Yuliar Kus Nugroho, who heads Bali Police’s criminal investigation unit, as quoted by Tribun-Bali.

According to Yuliar, the 34-year-old suspect allegedly ran several other accounts which were also connected to online prostitution.

“So a [potential] consumer can just open up those accounts and look up a list of women available on specific dates,” he explained.

As reported by Detik, H allegedly ran his online prostitution business for seven months. The rates he offer vary between IDR500,000 (US$35) and IDR1.5 million (US$106).

Under Indonesia’s Information and Electronic Transactions Law (UU ITE), H faces up to 12 years in prison.
