The head of Bali’s tourism workers union says 58,000 tourism workers in Bali have yet to receive any kind of professional certification, a statistic he is highlighting in the hopes that the government will help solve the problem by allocating funds to finance competency tests for industry practitioners.

As reported by Tribun-Bali, Putu Satyawira Marhaendra, the head of regional management for Bali’s federation of tourism workers’ union, said yesterday that, in Badung alone, only 12,000 out of 70,000 tourism workers are certified. Furthermore, tourism workers are obliged to renew their certification every three years, which is an added expense for many workers.

A member of Bali’s Regional Legislative Council (DPRD), Nyoman Parta, said that ongoing discussions at the council on a regional bill for employment management will aim to protect Bali’s local workers.

Parta noted that more than half of Balinese workers are unable to spare the money for training and competency test, which may impact their employability in the future, when such certifications might be a requirement for employment.

According to Tribun-Bali, the employment management bill will set out the government’s role in allocating sufficient funds for both training and certification.

As reported by state news agency Antara, the bill also covers the issue of minimum wage, durations of contracts for workers, as well as the treatment of interns..
