Yesterday, the Denpasar Court sentenced a Peruvian national, Jorgei Rafael Albornoz Gamarra,  to 10 years in prison for smuggling 4 kilograms of cocaine into Bali.

“We sentence the defendant to 10 years in prison and a fine of IDR 1 billion (USD 70,500),” said Bambang Ekaputra, who heads the panel of judges, as quoted by Radar Bali.

Gamarra was found guilty of violating Article 113 of Indonesia’s 2009 Law on Narcotics, which carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and IDR 10 billion fine.

His final sentence was also less than what the prosecutor demanded earlier this month, which was 15 years’ imprisonment.

Gamarra was arrested last December after customs officer grew suspicious of his luggage during a security check, prompting an examination that led to them finding cocaine hidden inside the lining of his suitcase.

Gamarra told officers that he had been tempted to transport the illegal drugs because he had been promised a reward of USD 1,000 by a person he identified as Juan Lechi in Brazil for the job, as reported by the Jawa Pos network.

The 4 kilograms of cocaine Gamarra brought with him was reportedly worth an estimated IDR 10 billion.
