The trial of Toshiyuki Tabuchi, a Japanese national, and an Indonesian man from Banyuwangi, Subagiyono, who were both arrested last March for allegedly attacking a police officer in Kerobokan, began yesterday at the Denpasar Court.

“The defendant, Subagiyono, also known as David, and defendant Toshiyuki Tabuchi on Sunday, March 31 … blatantly used force that resulted in a person being harmed, which in this case is Made Galih Artawi Guna,” prosecutor AA SP Dian Saraswati said, as quoted by state news agency Antara.

Prosecutors are charging both Tabuchi and David, who are friends, with violating Article 170 and 172 of Indonesia’s criminal code, which carries a maximum penalty of 5 years and six months.

The incident began when Galih, along with his friends, identified as Peter Daniel and Androyuan Elim, tried to help out the victim of an accident in Kerobokan.

Not long after, Subagiyono and Tabuchi, who were friends, came into the scene, at first trying to help out by managing traffic. At some point, Galih was reportedly shouting, “as if he was challenging someone,” which somehow triggered David, who then approached Galih.

“At the time, the victim (Galih) said (to David), ‘Sir, if you don’t want to help any longer, please just let me do it,’ after which David pushed the victim to the sidewalk,” Dian said, as quoted by Kumparan

David then threw a punch on Galih, which was followed with two more punches from Tabuchi, who also allegedly kicked Galih on the stomach.

According to Antara’s report, Galih then had to be treated at the BIMC Hospital for his injuries, and later reported the incident to the Kuta Police.
