The Bali Police recently arrested an Australian national, Matthew Richard Woods, after he allegedly snatched a bag from a Canadian tourist in Canggu last week.

“The local residents were yelling at the suspect.

Thankfully there was a police on patrol in the area at the time, so he (Woods) was able to evade the angry crowd,” I Dewa Putu Gede Anom, chief of North Kuta Police, said yesterday, as quoted by Bali Express.

The incident took place in the evening of June 19. According to Anom, Woods allegedly snatched the bag from the Canadian tourist – identified as Soraya Derghan – and then made a run for it by hopping onto a motorcycle, which was being driven by his partner.

The police were able to apprehend Woods quickly after local residents caught up with him and handed him over to  a police officer who had been patrolling around the area, according to Tribun-Bali. The other suspect, however, is reportedly still at large.

Woods has been on vacation in Bali for the past month, as reported by Bali Express. He appeared to be crying during a press conference held by the Kuta Police yesterday.
