According to a report from the Jawa Pos network, BNN’s operation took place in the early hours of Sunday and targeted the residents of 16 boarding houses in the area.

The operation, which authorities said was aimed at reducing the number of drug abuses in boarding houses, was reportedly carried out by an integrated team including members of the Indonesian Army (TNI), National Police and the Badung Municipal Police.

A total of 30 people were selected to have their urine screened and 8 tested positive for illegal narcotics, — some for methamphetamines and some for benzodiazepam, a type of psychoactive.

Under Article 75 of Indonesia’s 2009 Law on Narcotics, BNN officers are authorized to conduct urine screenings on any individual involved in an ongoing operation or investigation, which in this case gave them the right to test anybody residing in the raided boarding houses.

Ni Ketut Masmini, who heads Badung’s BNN, told the Jawa Pos network that those who tested positive for drugs will have to undergo further assessment and also rehabilitation.

“They will first be assessed, to determine which rehabilitation service they should receive. But they are not arrested because there was no incriminating evidence aside from the results of the urine test,” Masmini said.
