Police have yet to find any indication that alleged assailant, identified only as HN, is suffering from mental illness, Saipul said, adding that she had been fully aware of her actions.

Saipul says the stabbing incident had been triggered by a quarrel between HN and her mother on Saturday evening. HN’s father heard the squabble from a different part of the house, and went to see what was going on.

By then, HN had already moved to her own bedroom, and her father followed her and knocked on the door, asking her to perform the Asr prayer (third of the five daily prayers performed by Muslims).

“The suspect then stepped out of her room, cracking the door open while wielding the knife. When [her mother] saw what was going on… [she] went to get help,” Saipul said.

What precisely happened next is unclear, but police said that only moments later, HN would allegedly stab her father multiple times, even as he was attempting to escape the house via the front door.

Arriving neighbors called police to the scene, who were forced to disarm her before making the arrest.

HN’s father had lost too much blood by the time he reached the hospital, and reportedly died at 7pm on Saturday.

According to a report from iNews, HN claimed she had been acting in self-defense.

“The suspect claims the knife was pointed to her first so she had to act in self defense,” Saipul was quoted as saying.

Under Indonesia’s criminal code, HN could face up to 15 years in prison for the alleged murder.
