The young man, identified by authorities as Romy, caused a bit of a ruckus at Double Six Beach in Legian on Monday, after he allegedly tried to kiss a female tourist who was taking a walk by the beach. In a video that has since gone viral, Romy appeared to be squatting while trying to cover his face, surrounded by a crowd.

“People like you damage our reputation, affecting everyone. Let this go viral,” a man can be heard saying in the video.

According to a report from Detik, the incident took place yesterday afternoon. After attempting the kiss, Romy was promptly hit by the tourist’s boyfriend, which led some officers to intervene in order to avoid things escalating further.

“We suspected that [Romy] might be mentally ill because he was talking nonsense. He claimed to be from Padang, but after he was given some food, he started to talk normally,” Made Madia Surya Natha, who heads Legian Administrative Office, told Detik.

Romy told authorities that he had merely wanted to introduce himself to the female tourist.

As reported by Detik, he also told authorities that he came to Bali with his mother, but she left him behind to go to Lombok.

Given his circumstances, authorities handed Romy over to Bali’s Social Services, who promptly arranged for him to be sent back to Padang.

“We sent him home on that same day. We organized a relay [procedure] to take him back to Padang, West Sumatra,” Dewa Mahendra, who heads Bali Province’s Social Services, told Detik, adding that they had coordinated with social service agencies in East Java and Central Java to arrange his trip.
