Most parents are already reluctant about leaving their children in the hands of strangers, but an investigation into the shocking death of a three-month-old baby at a child daycare in Denpasar is likely making many parents in Bali even more paranoid about who is taking care of their kids.

Today, Police arrested the owner and an employee of the Princess House Childcare, identified as Listiana and Ni Made Sudiana Putri, both of whom are suspected of negligence leading to the death of the baby girl on May 9.

Denpasar police chief Ruddi Setiawan said in a press conference that the childcare facility had been operating without an official license and did not employ childcare certified staff.

“The daycare has been operating for three years, but it only possesses a license to operate as a foundation. It lacks licenses from the health and education agencies. This childcare recruited staff consisting of middle and high school graduates who do not possess expertise in childcare, especially babies,” Ruddi said, as quoted in a statement issued by Bali police.

The police say Princess House has two branches, both in Denpasar: the one on Jl. Drupadi where the 3-month-old allegedly died, and another on Jl. Nusakambangan. Both branches have now been closed by authorities.

What Happened?

On the morning of May 9, Andika dropped off his two children —  a boy and a baby daughter — at the daycare. He and his wife had already been used Princess House’s childcare services for about a month by that point. When the children’s mother and grandmother came by to pick them up in the evening, only his son came out.

“The staff said that my daughter is still waiting in a line,” Andika told Tribun-Bali, adding that the grandmother waited for the baby while his son and wife headed home first.

Only after the grandmother insisted on entering the premises of the daycare was she told that the baby has actually been brought to the emergency unit of a local hospital. By the time Andika himself arrived at the hospital, he saw his baby daughter connected to cardiac devices.

“The doctor told me that by the time the baby arrived in the emergency unit, she was already dead. Her hands and mouth had already turned blue. I think that my child was already dead when she was at the daycare, but I am leaving it all up to the police investigation to reveal the truth,” said Andika, who immediately filed a report after the incident.

The police are still waiting for the results of an ongoing autopsy.

Under Indonesia’s child protection law, the suspects could face up to five years in prison and fined a maximum amount of IDR 100 million (USD 6,979).
