The island’s inaugural Future Design Week is right around the corner — and with its solid programming of events and big name agencies and designers involved, it looks like it’s going to be a good one.

Through a series of exhibitions, installations, talks and workshops, Future Design Week aims to address issues of sustainability and get people in the community to think collectively about the question “How can we build a better world?” so that attendees will get to learn how design can play its part in building a better future.

The week-long program is going to feature some cool design industry pros from across Indonesia and abroad, who bring with them specializations ranging from conservation initiatives and turning waste into wearables, to low-waste and sustainable construction (just to name a few).

It’s all being hosted at Desa Potato Head in Bali, with events kicking off this coming Friday.

So, who are some of the featured speakers and guests?

Those of you who are familiar with the local design scene may already know the name Azalea Ayuningtyas, founder and current managing director of Du’Anyam, a social enterprise that produces and distributes wicker crafts by women from Flores, or Tony Fadell, the founder and former CEO of Nest, the company that pioneered the Internet of Things.

There’s also Maitri Fischer and Sean Nino Lotze, co-founders of Eco-Mantra, an environmental consulting company that focuses on the tourism industry, as well as author Kristine Harper, whose work focuses on sustainable and resilient product design.

Another highlight — a joint presentation by Jasmine Mariani and Madison Setiawan of The Shelter Project, a group of passionate and proactive entrepreneurs seeking to create positive change in the refugee crisis created by the 2018 Lombok earthquake disaster.

There’s IKEA’s research lab SPACE10 and London-based furniture and fashion designer Faye Toogood to look forward to, too.

The events are all free to attend, except for the Future Design Week closing party — that’s a ticketed event, and happens to feature Louis Vuitton art director and Off-White designer Virgil Abloh, who will be playing a DJ set there.
