A 51-year-old man allegedly assaulted his elderly father to death after they got drunk together yesterday, with police now looking for a motive.

“We are still developing the suspect’s MO. He has now been arrested,” Buleleng Police spokesman I Gede Sumarjaya said in a statement.

The incident occurred at 2:30pm yesterday, during which the suspect, identified by his initials GD, allegedly used an iron bar to attack his father, 72-year-old WP.

“The incident occurred because they started arguing after drinking hard liquor,” Sumarjaya said.

WP died after suffering heavy injury on the back of his head, which resulted in a 15-centimeter open wound. There were also wounds on his hands and back, while his right leg was also broken from impact with the iron bar, police said.

Under Indonesia’s criminal code (KUHP), GD could face a maximum of seven years in prison for assault that leads to death, or a maximum of 15 years if the assault was found to have been premeditated. He also faces an additional one-third of his final sentence for assaulting a family member.
