A 62-year-old man in Dompu, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) has been arrested for the alleged rape of his 13-year-old granddaughter, whom he sexually abused since March of last year, according to reports.

The Dompu Police confirmed the arrest earlier today, adding that authorities are still compiling more evidence as part of their investigation.

“We have arrested him on the suspicion of sexual assault and rape of his grandchild. The immoral act was done at his home,” Dompu Police spokesperson Hujaifah said.

The victim, identified as D, has reportedly been living with the suspect, identified as AS, since she was only a year old due to her parents being separated. She was allegedly first raped in March 2019 just after she got home from school. That day, D awoke from a nap upon realizing that someone was touching her, and found that AS was stark naked right in front of her.

“AS threatened to kill her if she shouted and told anybody. Because of that the victim felt helpless as she cried,” Hujaifah said.

AS have since allegedly raped D repeatedly, often when it was just the two of them at home as D’s grandmother often worked on the field in the afternoons. AS would reportedly tie her hands onto the bed before raping her.

The child eventually told her aunt and grandmother, who doubted the young girl and accused her of slander. However, D’s mother eventually learned of what happened and proceeded to report the matter to the authorities, which kickstarted the investigation against AS.

Under Indonesia’s Child Protection Law, AS faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and a fine of IDR1 billion (US$67,512).
