A 47-year-old man was found dead earlier this morning in his room at a boarding house (kost) in Denpasar after complaining of coughing and fever following a recent trip to Jakarta, leading to an evacuation process that’s been much talked about this morning.

The man, identified by his initial W, is reportedly from the North Sumatra capital of Medan, and had just returned from Jakarta a day prior. He reportedly had underlying health conditions, such as diabetes, cholesterol, and high levels of uric acid due to obesity.

Photos of W’s evacuation have circulated widely online since this morning, with one in particular showing the deceased wrapped in bedsheets and curtains as he was lowered down from the second floor balcony of his kost by officers wearing full protective suits, which is regularly used these days as a precaution.

“The deceased was found at around 2AM, and considering that his body is quite big, we were not able to use a stretcher … so along with police officers we evacuated him via the balcony on the second floor,” Widi, an officer from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) in Denpasar, said.

Authorities said his sister had checked up on him on Wednesday morning, and he was no longer feverish but had a little trouble breathing then. However, when his sister went to check on him in the evening, he did not respond and was eventually found lying dead on the floor of his room.

W’s cause of death is not immediately clear at the time of publication, and authorities did not suggest that it might be linked to the coronavirus.

“There were no signs of abuse. [When he was found] he was lying on his side on the floor … the deceased was not wearing any shirt, only shorts. We found medicine at the scene,” South Denpasar Police Chief, Nyoman Wirajaya, said.
